Anderson Combination Separator Traps

81S · 81F

Anderson Combination Separator Traps combine high-efficiency moisture separation and automatic condensate drainage in one compact inline unit. Intended for steam, air, and gas service, they remove entrained liquids and solids while automatically discharging condensate without steam, air, or gas loss.

Designed for

Combination Separator Traps are designed for applications where both moisture separation and automatic condensate removal are required. The integrated vane separator, internal baffle, and float trap work together to remove entrained liquids and solids, minimize re-entrainment, and continuously discharge collected condensate with minimal pressure drop.

These separators are ideal for protecting heat transfer equipment, rotating machinery, compressed air systems, and process equipment from corrosion, erosion, fouling, water hammer, and performance loss caused by wet steam or contaminated gas streams.

Product configurations

  • 81S. Compact threaded Combination Separator Trap designed for steam, air, and gas service. Available with or without an integral float trap.

  • 81F. Flanged version of the Model 81 separator trap for larger line sizes and installations requiring flanged connections. Available with or without an integral float trap.

  • Integral float trap option. Available configurations include separator-only designs or complete separator-trap assemblies that automatically drain collected condensate without manual intervention.

Key points of differentiation

  • Lower installation costs. Combines moisture separation and condensate drainage in a single compact body.

  • Improved equipment protection. Removes 99% of liquid droplets and solids 10 microns and larger.

  • Reduced energy loss. Integral float trap automatically discharges condensate without steam, air, or gas blow-by.

  • Cleaner outlet flow. Internal baffle helps prevent re-entrainment of collected liquid.

  • Higher system efficiency. Low pressure drop design maintains system efficiency.

  • Reduced maintenance. Eliminates the need for separate separators and drain traps.

  • Easy replacement. Available in common industrial line sizes for straightforward installation and retrofit applications.

Applications

Combination Separator Traps are commonly used anywhere clean, dry steam, air, or gas is required, including:

  • Heat exchangers

  • Steam turbines

  • Intercoolers and aftercoolers

  • Steam distribution systems

  • Compressed air distribution lines

  • Refrigerated air dryers

  • Utility steam systems

  • Refining and petrochemical facilities

  • Chemical processing plants

  • Power generation facilities

These units are especially valuable when condensate slugs, persistent moisture, or automatic drainage requirements threaten equipment reliability or process performance.

Principle of operation

Anderson Combination Separator Traps use a two-stage process that combines mechanical separation and automatic drainage.

  1. Impingement. Steam, air, or gas enters the separator and flows through an impingement vane separation element.

  2. Centrifugal force. Centrifugal and inertial forces drive entrained liquid droplets and solid particles toward the separator walls, where they separate from the primary flow stream.

  3. Liquid collection. Separated liquids and contaminants fall below an internal baffle into the collection chamber. The baffle helps prevent collected liquid from becoming re-entrained into the flowing steam or gas stream.

  4. Automatic condensate drainage. As condensate accumulates, the integral float trap senses the liquid level and automatically opens to discharge collected liquid. When condensate is removed, the float closes the valve, preventing the loss of valuable steam, air, or gas.
